Canned foods were initially made by Appert, N. (1750~1841), French, in 1804. He designed it to provide fresh foods to French troops, dispatched to Europe in the Napoleon era. He put foods in a glass bottle and corked loosely and then corked tightly after boiling the bottle. Namely, he used same method as the bottled foods today. However, since the underlying principle is same as the canned foods today, he is regarded as the founder of canned foods.

After 6 years, Durand, P, English, developed 3-piece can using tinplate instead of a fragile glass bottle. It was called "'tin canister" and there are some reports that represent "can" is from "canister". Cans have been used very practically from this time.

Can manufacturing method have been dramatically developed since the United States established can factories. As the demand of can rise, can manufacturing technology have been developed, mechanized and mass-produced.
At the beginning, people used scissors to cut tinplate and soldered it to make cans. Thereafter, people have developed automatic and hygienic process to produce double seamed can. Can manufacturing technology was used only for food preservation at the beginning but recently it is widely used for food, drink, paint and so on.

In 1890, Japanese introduced cans in Korea. People put abalone in a can and seamed with home seamer and then sterilized with boiling water. Japanese established can factory at Hamkyong-do in 1919 and Chosun Can was founded in 1938, which produced soldered steel can. Korean representative can manufacturing companies are Hanil Can Co., Ltd., Sam Kwang Can Co., Ltd., Samhwa Crown and Closure, One Jung Can Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Seung-Il Can Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Lotte Aluminum Company, etc.
